Went to the Montery Jazz Festival for the first time late last year and it was wonderful. Primarily mainstream music in a festive setting. (Actually, the area is used as a county fairground) Great groups and lots of ethnic food. Stayed in nearby Carmel, which is lovely.

JAZZFEST IN NO IS OVERWHELMING. GET AS SCEDULE EARLY FROM THE VISITOR & CONV BUREAU. WEEKDAYS BETTER THAN WEEKENDS; CHECK OUT EVENTS IN SCHOOLS; SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE -- 5-7 ACTS AT ONE TIME; YOU CAN AVOID THE TOURIST SCENE BY STAYING OUTSIDE THE QUARTER. A B&B IN THE GARDEN DISTRICT? FOOD, SIN & MORE

And what about the
FESTIVAL INTERNATIONAL DE JAZZ DE MONTREAL!!!
First week of July.
5 or 6 downtown streets totally blocked for the event.
Continuous outdoor concerts.
After Montreux, it is the # 1 jazz fest in terms of people participation.
Dont miss it!
PS: I work with VOIR, French-language alternative weekly here. Could e-mail you articles if you want + if you read French.
Ciao

With Peggy and I and some others, its clear we need to communicate with others who know of US Festivals coming up this Spring & Summer. Last spring in New Orleans was the "Week of 10,000 dancing umbrellas". I can recommend N.O. again in late April. Has anyone else have details on events?
EMail me if you want info on New Orleans.

I, too, was at N.O. Fest last year---the good weather week-end. I'd like to return this year but am looking for some reasonable ($) accomodations. Any suggestions?

For Jazz Fest, we booked tour from Houston. (Remarkable Journeys). They put us up in Metaire (sp?) across the river at Holiday Inn. Cheapo. Only bad thing is taxi ride across M. bridge costs $ extra.
Remarkable Journey Bus from Hou lv Fri at 3:00 get back Monday 2:00 AM is $215 incl housing, tickets and bus ride to fairground.
PS Fairground stands burned down. Will be tents this year for sure.

Ok. Reading RN4Golf list of jazz venues forces us to respond. How about the Freer Texas Rattlesnake round up featuring Al Dean and the All Stars ('Cotton Eyed Joe' fame)? Or the Burton Cotton Gin Festival with the "Unknown Pickers" And the Clute mosquito Festival with the coronation of Miss Skeeter? Or the Anuhuac Gater Festival (I can't remember any jazz bands there either).

If you are "Walking to New Orleans" for the JazzFest there is a great new guide to the city by Bethany Bultman published by Compass American Guides called New Orleans (the series is reviewed under best guidebooks), it's a must read before you go, and full of great anecdotes on the city and its history.
